Welcome Back - 2013 Registration is Now OPEN Sign up to participate in the conference today! Art Attack: A Call to Action is the title of this year’s Ontario Art Education Association Conference, being held at the Varley Art Gallery on Friday evening, October 25th and Unionville High School, Markham, on Saturday, October 26th, 2013, hosted by the York Region District School Board. Our theme addresses a larger and important truth: art is visceral. Art is not just something that we create; art exists because we exist. Art is almost a biological imperative, proof of our sentient nature and our development as a species. What does this mean in the various contexts of the real world and 21st century education? It means that we cannot be complacent. It is time to reassert our place at the core of the curriculum & re-focus on visual meaning making. ‣ While The Ontario Curriculum: The Arts 2009/2010 provides clear direction, educators need to look beyond skills and craft, to focus on both the creative process and the critical analysis process—the production strategies and the various ways of looking/responding. ‣ In addition, it is critical and affirming, as artists, to reanimate our inner lives and relationships through personal artistry. ‣ Finally, to survive as a culture, we need to remind society about arts’ significance—especially those wielding political and economic powers—that the “bottom line” is not as important as we are. Educators will investigate, share, and discuss innovative ways of teaching visual arts and media arts, and promoting arts learning in schools and communities. Workshops will address the need to act locally, but think globally! We have to be visual culture agents of change and diversity. Art Attack: A Call to Action will ensure visual arts and media arts educators are prepared for a successful campaign. Join us.
