Welcome the Sea [Part II] Yes, yes come forth and bury me in your sweet salt. I lie here, even when I die. I shall lie here as in a watery grave and not float, and he spoke and he laughed. Come, come, I welcome the sea. The water was covering his face. He still spoke in a gurgling voice. His mad laughter making bubbles dance out of his cracked lips. What are you doing? A voice entered him clear and straight. He lifted his head, looked above his bare feet. What !?, he bubbled out. There, before him, was a beautiful mermaid; eyes so blue they arrowed through the water, hair so golden, as if sunlight directed itself down upon her bare breast bobbing slightly. At the end of her narrow waist began her fin, a fin of shinny, rainbow colors. You mustnt harm yourself Georgio, that would be unkind. Unkind? He sat up, popped his head upon the surface. Yes, unkind, for I love to hear your stories. I hear them when you read out loud, and she too had surfaced her lovely face. But, but this must be a dream, a vision or something. Im not right in the head you know.....? Oh, I know how you suffer, but it took me a very long time to find the right key, and she produced a large, rusty key for the large, rusty lock that keeps him in. A key.....!? Yes my handsome Georgio. A key I searched and searched the vast ocean floor for ; sorry it too so long but it will set you free, and she smiled. Now, Georgio stood, the water almost up to his neck, he scratched his wet, long, curly hair, his beard too..... But, where will I go? If I swim up and around the guards will shoot me, if I..... No, no poor soul , I will take you across the sea. I will take you to the coast of Africa. Then you can write and read your stories to me by the roll of the waves; the shore, thats where Ill be. I can.....? Yes, silly, and she giggled. Then, he heard the clang of the key against the lock; saw the strained look she gave while turning the large key. He went to her, his hand touched hers. As they both twisted and twisted, then it popped! The cell door which was lined with sharp barnacles slowly opened.....Georgio swam out. Oh, my stories!, he stopped, looked up to the crevice where he kept them. Wait! She drove away from him. He stood there alone now. He looked up and up, saw the other cave-cells. He even saw the barrel of a French rifle sticking out high above and he quickly hid himself under the rock ledge that protruded. He didnt know what to do. What if she did not return. He could wait, then swim close to the rock far down along the cliffs base, yes, he could wait till dark. I could..... He started to speak to himself again. When, she popped up a few feet from him. Here, she held up a half-dozen empty bottles, all tied to a string and all corked. For your stories, and she giggled.....Georgio quickly tread water re-entering the cell, climbed up and began rolling the many stories into the bottles. As he did this, he sometimes glanced at her face, her neck and her lovely cleavage. She seem to know what he was thinking. After all hes a man and she, well, half-a-human woman but with a human heart. She blushed and put those thoughts quickly from her mind..... When he finished, he jumped back into the sea. Come....., was all she said as he took her hand, and Mermaid, man and bottles disappeared beneath the vast water. Below, at times, she took his mouth to hers and gave him lifes air. In time, now far enough from the cliff-prison, they surfaced..... We will be across in no time....., and she swam on taking him. Crossing the warm Mediterranean, she knew where there would be a sandbar or two so Georgio could stand on his toes and rest. Where she then fed him some food from the sea..... She then laughed too as he struggled to stand still trying to catch rain drops with his mouth a gaped from a passing dark cloud. When they finally neared the African Coast and standing on the very last sandbar. Both became silent feeling they would have to part. You have saved me. I dont even know your name. All Ive called you is Mermaid. You must have a name? She looked into his eyes, if I tell you my name, then you could own my heart , and she dipped her chin to the sea becoming very sad, knowing she would be even more lonely after he had gone and her tears began dropping slowly into the sea. For her life, was, lonely. You have, my, heart. she heard him say. Astarte, she spoke her name into the ripples below wiping tears from her cheeks. Astarte, that is a beautiful name, beautiful as you , you, my only love. You who saved from a watery hell and worst, madness, where I could not write anymore .You see ,these passed days ,right before you came. The waves that came at me had faces, yes faces of demons, roaring, shouting at me, and and I, I..... , and he began to weep ..... You said you loved me. ..... He looked at her, nodded yes, then leaned and kissed her..... As they kissed and kissed.... kissed as a sting of bottles bobbed and clicked beside them.... His own tears of sadness then turning to joy; wet joy running down his face and into their lips. Then, with his eyes still closed holding her. He felt her breast slide against him as... she... rose..... For an enchanted miracle had happened. An ancient miracle for love that could only unfold if a man truly cherished a mermaid my giving the truest of a kiss. Then while kissing if tears of joy so joined with tears of sorrow and both bearing tears holding complete passion ; then those tears of passion, passing together through her lips and down to her very heart ; only then would she become a real, whole woman..... Aaah, and so, the miracle of two lovers stood with in the swaying, emerald sea; captured by each others eyes as a soft... breeze... blew. And knew , knew that ,thisbe, never would they be blue.....no,never would Astarte and Georgio be blue forever more. Ooh Georgio, my Georgio, and he held her..... *************************************************************************************************************************************************** [ the finale ] By: George Martorano copyright: 12973 1/25/14
