An upper level low over northern South Australia will move eastwards over northern New South Wales during the weekend. A surface trough will deepen further over western Queensland today in response to the upper low. This trough and an associated rain band should then shift towards the east of the state this evening and is expected to clear off the southern coast during Sunday morning. Another high will move into the Great Australian Bight on Sunday and intensify with a ridge building over northern Queensland. A cooler southwesterly airmass will start to extend across south of the state behind the trough. Forecast for the rest of Friday Widespread showers, rain areas and isolated thunderstorms are expected to extend from the east tropical coast through the central interior and into the southern interior. Rain periods will intensify in these regions during the day with locally heavy falls developing, particularly with thunderstorms. The rain band will begin to slowly move to the east late in the day, extending the rain and isolated thunderstorms to the Capricornia, Central Highlands and eastern Maranoa by the end of the day. Isolated showers will persist about the southeast coast. The southeastern interior should remain fine and partly cloudy. The far west and northwest should remain fine and clear. Moderate to fresh east to northeasterly winds through the east, tending moderate west to southwesterly over the far west. Saturday 16 August Widespread showers and thundery rain areas to extend from the central coast through to the central interior and extend into the southern interior and the southeastern corner of the state during the morning. Rain periods will contract out of the central interior and central coast during the day with possible locally heavy falls contracting into the southeast of the state, particularly with thunderstorms. Isolated to scattered showers will continue about the tropics in an onshore wind flow. A relatively moist airmass will extend into southwestern Queensland in the wake of the trough generating isolated showers. Fine and mostly sunny conditions are expected in the northwest. Daytime temperatures will remain below average over much of the state due to cloud cover or southerly winds. Moderate to fresh east to northeasterly winds through the east, tending moderate to fresh west to southwesterly over the west. Sunday 17 August The upper low is expected to move further east southeast over New South Wales while the surface trough will contract east off the southern Queensland coast during the morning. The rain band with possible locally heavy falls will shift into the southeast districts, most likely contracting off the southern coast early in the morning, with a dry, gusty westerly change then clearing any remaining shower activity by the afternoon. Some low cloud will persist through the southern interior with possible isolated showers. A new high will move east over South Australia, extending a weak ridge and an onshore wind flow into the eastern tropics north of Townsville with isolated to scattered showers expected. Fine and mostly sunny conditions are expected elsewhere. Monday 18 August The upper low is expected to move into the eastern Tasman Sea during the day. The surface trough will be located off the east coast, with a cooler southwesterly airmass extending across most of the state. Isolated showers are expected in the southwesterly flow through the southeastern interior, particularly about the southern border, with temperatures well below the August average over most of the state. Showers are possible about the northeastern peninsula coast in a weak onshore flow. Fine and sunny conditions are expected over the remainder. Tuesday 19 August A new high will strengthen over the Great Australian Bight and extend a ridge over the northeast coast and maintain a relatively dry airmass across most of Queensland. A surface low pressure system will deepen over the Tasman Sea in response to the upper low shifting east. The surface low will extend cold, fresh and gusty southwesterly winds into southeastern Queensland, with possible isolated showers over the southeastern interior, particularly near the southern border. Mostly fine conditions are expected over the tropics, with only isolated showers over the northeastern Peninsula. _______________________________________________________ Forecast for the North Tropical Coast and Tablelands - Cloudy.
