Welcome to #artctrl > Start here! < Q. What’s all this about? A. #artctrl is an alternative reality game (ARG)/storytelling experiment running as part of the You Are Here (YAH, youareherecanberra.au) festival in Canberra, Australia. The story has already started to play out and will continue until the last day of the festival on 23 March 2014. Q. What is an ARG? A. Think of it as a cross between a treasure hunt, an episodic TV show and interactive theatre. A story is told via online content including fictional websites, live/filmed scenes and physical items. Players are able to interact with the characters to influence the story and participate in fun challenges both online and at live events. Q. How does it work? A. Parts of the story are being released most days on Twitter at #artctrl (https://twitter/search?q=%23artctrl) This is supported by a number of live interactive scenes during the Festival as well as clues provided in physical items, such as the program. The live scenes will be filmed and released online, but for maximum enjoyment visit festival events, get on Twitter and keep an eye out for clues! There is a real prize to win at the end of the game. Q. What is the story? A. As at 9 March 2014: There is a war to control the arts in Canberra. The Benevolent Ministry of Art (bmoa.net.au) led by the debonair Mr B and his Head of PR/bodyguard Ms X have swept into power following the exile of previous chaotic arts controller, T-Bone, shortly after the 2013 YAH festival. They maintain a tight control on the arts, making sure every event is nice and Acceptable. On 27 February 2014 T-Bone publicly resurfaced in Canberra and challenged Mr B during the YAH program launch (video here: youtube/watch?v=kXfkEkw4zKU). During his exile T-Bone seems to have acquired two followers: martial arts expert Mac Deadly (or McDeadly as the CityNews have called her) and ‘Bird, who’s origins are unclear at present. Since their appearance they have managed to convince a number of local arts organisations to side with them against the BMOA. Simultaneously, a gentleman writer calling himself The Scribe has moved to Canberra and is providing excellent blow-by-blow accounts of the conflict on his blog: intermissionupdate.blogspot.au He’s a gun… er freelance writer, for hire too. Following the program launch a mysterious document has surfaced, with the coded phrase: “THE ARTIFACT APPEARS. Q. How do I play the game? A. Although there are specific challenges already available online, you can simply watch the drama unfold on Twitter, here and during the festival. To really enjoy the experience however we recommend that you interact with the characters via social media. Hint: a good start would be pledging your allegiance to either Mr B/BMOA (@Real_Mister_B) or T-Bone (@TBoneRulez666) on Twitter. Q. I don’t use Twitter/can’t attend events - can I still participate? A. #artctrl can be enjoyed in a number of ways. If you’re not on Twitter you can visit The Scribe’s blog for regular updates on the action: intermissionupdate.blogspot.au and key plot points and video will also be noted here at facebook/groups/artctrl/ For maximum enjoyment however we recommend you get on to Twitter and engage with the characters! To win the prize will require attendance in person at the festival, but if you follow the story the rough WHEN and WHERE will become clear - and the fun is in the journey rather than the arrival :) Q. I have a question not covered here… A. Just ask it! Well do our best to provide as clear answers as we can, without spoiling anything :)
