Thomas Cirilo has gone missing. In 2013, President Salva Kiir issued Republican decree No. 10/2013 for the promotion of SPLA Major Generals to Lieutenant Generals. Among the promoted officers included the powerful and loyal Gen. Thomas Cirilo who led the government team in negotiating the surrender of different rebel groups and reintegration into the mainstream SPLA in 2013. During the weekend, reports started filtering in that Gen Cirilo had disappeared mysteriously and that he was mobilising for an armed rebellion against his government. However, Gordon Buay, a high ranking official at South Sudan’s Foreign Affairs Ministry, told Chimpreports on Sunday afternoon that Gen Cirilo was away on official business. “I would like to alert the public that the news report alleging that Gen. Thomas Cirilo Swaka disappeared in Juba is a total lie. Gen. Thomas Cirilo went for a mission outside the country last Wednesday and returned to Juba today on December, 7,” said Buay, a controversial politician. He accused the website which carried the story of “inciting violence“, adding its management “needs to hire journalists who don’t have links to the rebels of Riek Machar so that the website maintains its credibility.” He noted: “The journalists who want to ascertain the truth should go to Bilpam Headquarters on Monday to interview Gen. Thomas Cirilo Swaka in person. Doing so would quickly dispute the false allegations designed to create panic and chaos in Juba.” Several SPLA Generals have since defected from SPLA to join forces with Dr Riek Machar to fight their way to power in Juba. chimpreports/south-sudan-speaks-on-missing-army-general/
