I was asked about a good source book for the baroque and my textbook and I still think authoritative book is Bukofzer, Manfred (1947). Music in the Baroque Era. New York: W.W. Norton & Co. ISBN 0-393-09745-5. I have the book in pdf format but unfortunately this and several other of my books exceed the upload size limit for facebook.
