Well, I could get slammed for this... What if, a long, long time ago, a story went around that a guy called Noah escaped a local flood with his family and some of his animals by building a boat? What if, later, story tellers turned it into a spectacular morality epic (or some such), making the story into an all the people, all the animals, the whole world thing - to tell an exemplary story about God and human beings, judgement and salvation, good and bad behavior and a bunch of other things? A campfire story with a moral intent... and a promise. Would that ruin the Bible for you? Its a classic - a ripping good story. I feel no need to squeeze all the animals in all the world into one boat to get the point of the story.
