Well, I decide to look up the turtle and here is the answer: The picture of took was of the Ornate Box Turtle which is the Kansas State Reptile! Who woulda thunk? Kansas Box ..... January 21st, 2011 | Author: Librarian Led by students at Caldwell Elementary in Caldwell, Kansas, the ornate box turtle was adopted as the state reptile on April 14, 1986. The ornate box turtle is a very quiet and shy reptile. From April into October it lives on the prairie and in woodlands. During cold weather months it burrows into the ground. The distinquishing marks of this “terrapene ornata” (scientific name) is brown shells with yellow or yellow-orange lines; head, legs and tail are brown or green with yellow or yellow-orange spots. The box turtle is anywhere from 4 to 6 inches long. Males have red eyes; females, brownish yellow. Females lay 2 to 8 white eggs in early summer; hatchlings hatch after 2 months. Also, each section (scute) of the top shell shows growth rings, one for each year of a turtle’s life. Some box turtles live 30 years or more. On a hometown note, Henry and Gloria Pence from Satanta, have had approximately 10 box turtles living in their backyard for years. Gloria says one has been around at least 10 years. These little reptile friends hybernate under their house in the cold months and come out in the spring. Gloria has found turtle eggs in her flower beds and grandchildren occasionally find a baby turtle. These little creatures are so tame that they have developed a liking to barbecue when Henry cooks outside!
