Well I had intended to post on here an article on the significance - TopicsExpress

Well I had intended to post on here an article on the significance of iodine in the diet, and the association between iodine deficiency and weight gain. As some of you might be aware, I had mentioned that iodine deficiency can be associated with weight gain, in my comment; should obesity be classified as a disease, and I had aimed to explorer this further in my new article. However, I came across an issue, I was unable to find conclusive evidence that there is an association, that’s not to say that iodine deficiency doesn’t have an effect of weight gain, but instead means that there seems to be a lack of information showing a correlation. I did however, manage to find a study that showed statistics comparing the weight gain from the overproduction of thyroid stimulating hormone (THS) (which I believe can be an effect of iodine deficiency), to weight gained by diabetes. So there does seem to be some evidence out there, but even the authors of this study Knudsen et al said that their statistics could not be used as proof: “These observational data do not prove any causal association, but there are plausible biological explanations and other studies pointing in the same direction. A relationship has been found between body weight and thyroid disease; the study was, however, based on self-reported thyroid dysfunction, and data were from a highly selected cohort of weight-conscious women (18). In a cohort of 85-yr-old subjects, an association was found between thyroid function and BMI, but data were not adjusted for possible confounding” (Small Differences in Thyroid Function May Be Important for Body Mass Index and the Occurrence of Obesity in the Population, 2005, p.5). I feel that I may have wrongly assumed that the general consensus is iodine deficiency can lead to weight gain due to the amount of information on websites describing the link. It was only when I was writing my article, that I started to come across studies that listed the clinical side effects of iodine deficiency, but without weight gain as one of the side effects. This has led me to searching Google scholar for more scientific studies describing the link. Although my search has been minimal, I have yet to find a scientific study conclusively showing the association between iodine deficiency and weight gain. There now seems to be a puzzle to solve, where has all this information on the internet come from? What studies were they based on? And why do some many people believe this association to be true? When there is clearly a lack of scientific information on the subject. I want to make it clear, that my own opinion is that I believe that there could be a possible association. It might be that I’m been silly and that the evidence is plainly out there, let’s not forget my own research has been minimal, well if it is, please can someone present it to me. I truly would like to see conclusive evidence so that I can finish my article in the way I had intended, but it’s looking likely that I will have to rewrite it. I will post what I have done on here soon.
