Well, a lot has been said about Corporate Governance in state owned Enterprises and Parastatals but does it necessarily mean that the private companies are properly governed? I am an upcoming consultant who has worked for both the private and state owned companies and would like to tell you that there is also a lot to be done in the private sector in terms of good governance inasmuch as in Parastatals but its only that in state owned enterprises there is much of the public eye such that nothing goes unreported nomatter how small it is and this calls for people who are multi skilled and exceptional in their corporate dealings. In the Private sector a lot is happening though a lot goes unnoticed and unpublished i.e I have been chatting with fellow friends in industry trying to highlight the professional way of dealing with retrenchments. You see a newspaper publication talking about a company which is about to retrench and request its employees who are willing to go for voluntary retrenchment or the company can even beg its people to apply which is very correct, however the challenges comes when noone offers him/ herself for voluntary retrenchment and oftentimes employees are compelled by the employer to sign a voluntary retrenchment form which defies good corporate governance and oftentimes employees are not served note a couple of months earlier of the intends of the company. You will see such companies being audited and come up with a very clean audit report which now bring in another question of the role of Auditors. When auditors check the signed voluntary retrenchment forms are they also not supposed to check at random and try to call and verify from the retrenchees whether it was truly voluntary or forced voluntary retrenchment.
