Well done Australia on imposing a total ban on the importation of rhino body parts. Not so well done South Africa where the Department of Environmental Affairs is considering asking the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species for a ‘limited and strictly regulated form of legal sales (of rhino horn) to curb the black-market trade. IT WILL NOT WORK! What it will do is fan the flames of demand especially from Vietnam, China and other eastern nations. The price will not fall but increase and some people who have stock-piled rhino horn will, in the short term, become extremely wealthy. The poacher will not go away he will still come after the rhino for its horn in a far more lucrative and difficult to police market. But let us consider for a moment that the South African proposal comes about and that it does work will the poacher then go home? No of course he will not. He will come after the other animals that go into Far Eastern medicines. He will be after the lion, the leopard, (the tiger) etc in ever increasing numbers and the elephant for the ivory. You cannot humanely take away bits of their body parts and you cannot de-scale the pangolin. Come to your senses South Africa. These animals are all endangered and magnificent. They need our protection not our exploitation.
