Well it WAS the 70s, guess someones got to do it... :-) Did you know that Debby Boones mega-hit You Light Up My Life was a cover version? Yeah, well neither did I until stumbling upon that little factoid whilst looking up something else. Although Didi Conns character in the movie of the same title sings the song, Ms. Conn lip synchs, and it is not Debby Boones version she lip synchs. The song was done for the movie by a singer named Kasey Cisyk. Kvitka Kasey Cisyk was a New York born singer of Ukrainian heritage. She was a classically trained coloratura soprano and is best known (heard?) as the singer of such classic advertising jingles as You deserve a break today (McDonalds) and Have you driven a Ford, lately? The films director/writer/composer was a man named Joe Brooks who was familiar with Cisyk because, among other things, he wrote jingles. So, he picked Cisyk to dub Didi Conns singing in the flick and a single was released of You Light Up My Life, it peaked at #80. Cisyk later successfully sued the films producers to receive credit as a performing artist, which was not given in the films credits. She also sued and settled with Brooks for money earned working on the film and record. She also did work as a session singer, particularly with Quincy Jones produced artists. After the film she continued singing jingles, did two Grammy-nominated Ukrainian folk albums and did vocals for a couple of other movies. Kasey Cisyk died in 1998, a week before her 45th birthday, from breast cancer.
