Well it seems like we have reached an impasse. It is a polemic which is never useful. If you want to stay on this page could you please consider entering in genuine dialogue. PLEASE NOTE: I never meant for any dairy farmers to take this personally. I am sorry if you have been offended. I am not saying you are all deliberately cruel people. I believe many of you are naturally kind, caring and compassionate people who have been born into a world where farming animals is the norm. Many of you do your very best to ensure that cows/ calves in your care are treated as well as possible under the circumstances and I am grateful for that. Some of the stories told of staying up with calves at night, covering cows with blankets, finding new homes for them are testimony to your care. However, I am asking you to think critically about the dairy process and your part in it. I am hardly a threat. I have a miniscule amount of calves and realize how very much hard work it is raising them. They are really amazing animals, and I know that I have common ground with many dairy farmers in saying this. Can we PLEASE focus on our common ground? What I am saying is that the dairy industry is intrinsically cruel and some farmers (not all) seem to be intent on denying cows their feelings. All dairying/ farming is a utilitarian exercise where humans rationalize their use. What I am saying is that animals (including cows) are autonomous beings with a right to their own life on their own terms. I know that it is near impossible to grant them this in current circumstances where they have been bred so that they have problems such as over production of milk leading to mastitis and other issues. So the next best thing is to stop breeding them for farming purposes and let the remaining ones live a full life.
