Well ladies and gentlemen, I have to be blunt: under no circumstances should you go to law school, or even graduate school for that matter. I also wonder whether college is even worth it. I enjoy practicing law, but the truth of the matter is there is overall very little work in the legal field. There are relatively few, if any, opportunities for growth. Unlike most others (i.e. 66% of every years post-recession graduates who fail to find anything legal at all) , I am incredibly lucky to at least have some legal experience under my belt, but in no way, shape or form can I pay off any of my student loan debt. Theres no way I can buy a house, travel or do any of the other things Id like to do. With very few job prospects, most, if not all, companies/firms seek attorneys with at least five years of experience or more. Now, why should someone go into $180,000 of student debt for such piss poor job prospects and with such poor return on investment? Why do you need to waste an additional three years of your life and get more absolutely useless education? Putting it frankly, this situation was not what I--or anyone else--had expected. Every single one of my family members (eight in total) who became lawyers at an earlier pre-recession/depression time period (circa 1975 to 2004) found plenty of lucrative work as attorneys, regardless of the school they went to. None were ever underemployed or unemployed. None ever had to beg for legal work or take positions that were volunteer. Up until the last ten years, none graduated law school with debt. Theres something really messed up in this country when an attorney with twenty five years of experience is competing with recent lawyers for entry level positions. Theres something really messed up when two hundred applicants apply for one legal position in 48 hours. Theres something really messed up when lawyers, PhDs, MBAs and masters candidates have to take $8 an hour retail jobs. Let me leave it at that. Like hundreds of thousands of other young people whove had the rug taken out from under them, this time period has been incredibly frustrating and infuriating. Looks like making a living in this great, wonderful and distinguished country is the new American Dream. The words of wisdom go get an education and you can do anything at all! is complete bullshit. I busted my ass because everyone said that is how you succeed. I feel duped and betrayed, and I am losing faith in America. The answer is all young people need to start voting. We need to start organizing, because the current voting block, from where they are sitting, do not understand or get the problems that are facing us. Things need to change, because the system is broken. And if Congress does not change it, then the people will, because Im starting to lose my patience. My 0.02 cents for the day. That is my rant. It had to be said.
