Well next week is Mollys BIG Day. She gets spayed. There has been a lot of new information on the best age to spay and neuter your pets. Golden Retrievers in particular definitely benefit by being spayed and neutered as late as possible. This has to do with the delayed closure of their growth plates, and it has now been shown that early spay and neuter IN THIS BREED can result in joint problems later in life. For most breeds, spay and neutering should be done from just about six months up to a year, with spays earlier and neuters later. If you want to prevent mammary tumors in your female dog, make sure to spay before the first heat cycle if possible. In male dogs, neutering around 8-12 months seems to be working best. Now shelter groups and humane organizations still neuter and spay very early in life. This is absolutely OK, but if you can choose, at least for now, a little later may be a little better. But please, SPAY AND NEUTER YOUR PETS! Dr. Brett
