Well, one thing that the incidents yet unfolding in Ferguson surely demonstrate is that people of color and ethnicity cannot trust the mainstream criminal justice system to operate in their best interests. One terrible consequence is that such a conclusion most often leads to a further loss of hope for the future for these tens of thousands of people unable to secure their basic civil rights through the very social institutions designed to protect and serve them, but in fact do neither. I sure hope this does not lead to vigilante justice, but I remember the events that led to black radicalism and the rise of militant black voices and cities going up in fire. The forces of intemperance too often lead to hate crimes and acts of violence, and I fear we are going to begin to .witness a rash of cop killings in urban areas. When we block the road to equal treatment under the law by using the instruments of justice to suppress people, we leave few realistic options for them other than those involving organized violence. God help us all.
