Well, well, in news today a private members bill in the House of Commons sponsored by an NDP Member of Parliament passed second reading by a vote of 258 to 2 making it nearly unanimous by all political parties to make November 11th (Remembrance Day) a statutory holiday in Canada. It now must pass third reading in the House & go the Senate for their ratification & Royal Assent. This is all well & good but where were our politicians 70 & 80 years ago up to today? Why did it take until now after almost all the WW2 veterans are gone & certainly every last one of the WW1 veterans who have all passed away for the Canadian Armed Forces to be recognized properly? My generation grew up knowing what war was like in families. Every kid I knew had fathers who served in WW2. Some dads or uncles never came home. Kids told the stories they heard growing up. Over the years Ive seen Remembrance Day cheapened to becoming the start of the Christmas shopping season or employers refused to give the day off on Remembrance instead trading it for a day off around Christmas time. Its sad that this country didnt do this when my dad & my uncles were alive. All this because of a terrorist attack? Our veterans past deserved better treatment.
