Well, well, well. It’s becoming increasingly apparent that this President Barack Obama is certainly not the same person as candidate Barack Obama. The same president who promised an unprecedented level of transparency has deleted his campaign promises from his pre-election website, change.gov. His vision for reform, from revitalizing the economy to closing Guantanamo to establishing a new relationship with the Middle East has disappeared and the site now links to the official whitehouse.gov site. According to The Sunlight Foundation, the site was available until a few short months ago and was a perfect way to compare Obama’s vision with his actions during his time in office. Obama and his cronies are well aware of his diminishing reputation. Now that the Obama Administration is going after Edward Snowden mercilessly, his campaign statement about protecting whistleblowers rings hollow: “Protect Whistleblowers: Often the best source of information about waste, fraud, and abuse in government is an existing government employee committed to public integrity and willing to speak out. Such acts of courage and patriotism, which can sometimes save lives and often save taxpayer dollars, should be encouraged rather than stifled. We need to empower federal employees as watchdogs of wrongdoing and partners in performance. Barack Obama will strengthen whistleblower laws to protect federal workers who expose waste, fraud, and abuse of authority in government. Obama will ensure that federal agencies expedite the process for reviewing whistleblower claims and whistleblowers have full access to courts and due process.” Also in the list of campaign promises? A tax cut for middle class workers – who saw a tax increase when the Social Security payroll deduction climbed to its normal rate after a brief cut. How about this one? “Give Real Authority to the Privacy and Civil Liberties Board: Support efforts to strengthen the Privacy and Civil Liberties Board with subpoena powers and reporting responsibilities. Give the Board a robust mandate designed to protect American civil liberties and demand transparency from the Board to ensure accountability.” It’s been widely reported that this board has been largely ignored by the Obama Administration while more and more information on the NSA’s unconstitutional violation of Americans’ privacy rights comes out. Perhaps by scrubbing his site clean of his broken promises, he thinks he can pull the wool over our eyes. But most of us see right through that.
