Well….what a busy Christmas and New Year period it was at Saffron Screen! With sell-outs and large audience numbers it has been great! And we can reassure you that the school says the heating is now fixed - thanks for bearing with us through the chill. Talking of sell-outs we have MORE this weekend! But I’m getting ahead of myself again…. This weekend kicks off with NIGHTCRAWLER (15). Scoring a whopping juicy 95% on rottentomatoes this film has just received 4 nominations for the BAFTAs 2015 including best actor and screenplay! It tells the story of Lou Bloom, a man desperate for work who discovers the high-speed world of L.A. crime journalism, films crashes, fires and murder scenes. Jake Gyllenhaal stars in this gripping and tense film which has more than a hint of black comedy! Friday and Saturday at 8pm. Highly recommended. For the matinees, Sat at 3pm and Sun at 2pm & 5pm we have SOLD OUT screenings of PADDINGTON (PG). This delightful film is based on the beloved novels by Michael Bond and tells the story of the comic misadventures of a young Peruvian bear. Screening again at 3pm on Mon 16th Feb, get your tickets NOW! On Sunday at 5pm we have Woody Allens MAGIC IN THE MOONLIGHT (12A), back after our projector breakdown last year. Colin Firth stars as grouchy, arrogant Stanley Crawford whose alter ego is Chinese conjurer Wei Ling Soo. Stanley is summoned to debunk an alluring young clairvoyant, played by Emma Stone, as a fraud, but soon finds himself falling under her on spell. Beautifully set in the Côte dAzur and with a great cast, don’t miss out! On Sun at 8pm we screen the documentary HOCKNEY (15). This film takes a glimpse at one of Britains most important artists, David Hockney. With unprecedented access to the painter and photographers personal film archive and incredible work, this is a warm and touching look at one of Britains greatest living painters. Lastly, as if we haven’t given you choice enough, we have LEVIATHAN (15). Voted the best film at the London Film Festival 2014 and nominated for a foreign language film BAFTA, this is the story of Kolya who lives in a small fishing town near the stunning Barents Sea in Northern Russia. He owns an car-repair shop that stands right next to the house where he lives with his family. He is harassed by the corrupt local mayor for his land and business and his attempts to fight back only worsen his situation. With superb acting, beautiful desolate scenery, humour and tragedy, this is a must-see for arthouse film-lovers!
