Well, you were all there to witness it. you saw the assembly that people will be disparaging until Christmas break. It wasnt that great, true. It wasnt what we wanted or expected, true. It missed the opportunity to do something truly worthwhile, also true. There is something I would like you to notice. In all of these things, you find out that none of you really cared either way. If this is what you respond with to something even remotely about cyber bullying, none of you opened your eyes. I realize that this did not live up to the expectations we had set for it, but weve responded in the worst of ways. One of the main points of todays assembly was to address the importance of what we do and say on the internet. The woman that came in to talk to us spoke about how vulgar and negative comments are used in evaluations for colleges. Of the three or four statuses I have read so far about the assembly, 14 vulgar words were used. Now, I realize that some of you dont really care. That is fine. Now, many of you, myself included, were disappointed by the fact that the topic of cyber bullying wasnt really covered in the slide show. Not a single person that I spoke to had mentioned, or even thought, to focus there commentary on the presentation itself. Instead, they focused their negativity on the woman that presented the information. Did any of you even think that she may not have even made the presentation herself? Had it occurred to you that she was required to say what she said by her higher-ups, or even the school? Not only did you berate her for the lack of content on cyber bullying, but for the information she mentioned from the college study. She didnt make those statements herself. In fact, she didnt even say that she agreed with any of those words used to describe our generation. We failed as a student body, and some teachers, to recognize and understand her feelings. Do you know what thats called? It is called a lack of EMPATHY. Maybe there was something to that list after all. If you dont agree, lets look at another word we saw on that list. The word is ENTITLED. It means that one believes to be deserving of certain privileges or special treatment inherently. Under the assumption that most of you do not pay for your own phone bills, lets address why you think you deserve to be able to keep what goes on in your phone a secret. Dont misunderstand, I dont like the idea of it, but whoever bought it has the right to see that it is used properly. Realize that there are actually some benefits to the idea. For students that are being bullied, it is often hard to talk about it with others. If a parent could see the harassing messages that their child is receiving. The parents could do something. Besides, should you really be doing the things that you want to keep private anyway? If you are worried about talking to friends about private matters, do it in a private space. The internet, as was said, is not a private place. Parents will understand. Most are good about keeping confidentiality. Think about all the embarrassing baby photos they have resisted putting on the internet all these years. What I mean by all of this is simple. Dont hate the player, hate the game, because all of you that ragged on the woman that came in today here on Facebook are just cyber bullies themselves.
