Went camping with the young men from our ward this week, Thurs thru Sat. We went to the eastern side of the San Rafael Swell. Dramatic country composed of the giant "swell" of the earth that resulted in the formation of slot canyons on the eastern side. Some canyons so narrow you can touch both sides with each hand but hundreds of feet high/deep. Cool in the shady narrows but hot in the wider spots where the sun shining on sandstone is like an oven. A great time was had by all. Exciting for me because we came home by driving across the swell to the western - Emery County - side where I was raised. Once we reached the I-70 freeway we flew across the rugged terrain where it used to take my grandpas days and days to ride their horses driving cows to Sinbad. And I saw the parts of the freeway where I worked briefly as a stake chaser during its construction. And I saw deep into Eagle Canyon where my dad and I made a jeep trip long before the construction of the freeway. We may have been the first or only mechanical vehicle to traverse that part of Eagle Canyon. We had to turn around and hurry home when the jeep slipped of a rock bridge we built to climb up on a terrace and sprung a leak in the gas tank. Fun!
