Went on a really interesting Consultation last night, one that is quite common when two families come together, The two dogs generally get on however at times they have got into fights. The simple answer is that the two dogs were not speaking the same language they had both learnt there own behaviours within each household with each owner giving affection and reward (inadvertently) for the wrong thing. So the more excited one dog got the more affection, while the other dog was fearful and got reprimanded. When they were brought together the nervous dog would get fearful of the excited dog and tell it by submissive aggression (lowering body & growling) but the other dog did not respond and kept getting more excited - which led to fights . If you do bring two dogs together you have to get on the same page mentally and teach the dogs how to behave together (it cannot be left to chance). When the two dogs were in a confrontation and the nervous dog growled and he would be reprimanded, (this is not the dog to reprimand as he is simply saying go away!!), it was the other dog who should have been moved for not respecting the signal and the other dogs space. Just because a dog growls does not mean it is the aggressive dog!!
