Went to my third Buffett concert. I was a fan long before my first concert, so I was always more interested in the music than the scene. I had a great time, but Im feeling reflective. Buffett concerts arent about music - if they were, we wouldnt bother with costumes and beach balls. Buffett concerts are a little bit about Buffett - or more precisely, what we think Buffett represents: freedom, relaxation, beach culture, and being something else, whether thats a schoolboy, a pirate, or a sailor. Mostly, a Buffett concert is about us. We dress up and amuse ourselves with beach balls. We give Mac polite applause for a phenomenally virtuosic guitar solo and we go nuts when a cheeseburger shows up on the screen. We know the words to that one. And how do we celebrate our fantasies about the Buffett lifestyle? We drive to a concrete jungle, park on an asphalt lot and drink from our tailgates, herd into a stadium with 40,000 of our closest friends, and watch the show on the screens because the stage is a block away. People sure are strange...
