Went to the MaPP (Marine planning partnership) meeting last night - TopicsExpress

Went to the MaPP (Marine planning partnership) meeting last night in Campbell River....a lot of people seemed confused as to what theyre all about, including me....Im still not 100% sure, but I believe they want to be a body that councils the provincial government about good ecological practices in the BC coastal areas...they want to create zones which have different levels of protection...which is good....however, they cant seem to say anything about salmon farms as thats federal jurisdiction and theyre only seeking to counsel on a provincial level!...a person in the audience says that makes them weak, as governments provincial and federal dont seem to listen to anyone if it interferes in what governments want....although the folks I spoke with were very nice, and one of the gentlemen confidentially said he was against fish farms, he couldnt say anything negative as its not part of MaPPs mandate....at the end of the talk they took questions and quite a few people spoke up and said they didnt like the fish farms and were disappointed that Cohens recommendations werent being implemented and also that MaPP wasnt opposed to the farms.... I spoke up and said I liked the idea of what they were doing, however, as long as the farms remain in the migration routes, then my feeling on what they are doing is all for naught....that got some people upset as later on I was told that MaPP will try and stop mining, and logging etc where it would harm wild salmon...which is good...but if the farms are still in the way then it still isnt good enough. Im glad I went, but this almost feels like one of those omnibus bills....where a lot of it looks good and so we say yes....but some of it looks bad (like the finfish aquaculture) but because theres so many yess for the good stuff, they will use it against us and say British columbians say yes to MaPP which includes the farms....not that I have any proof of that, but at the end of the evening I was told the fish farmers had a table there, and even though the room wasnt that large, I didnt see it, and that bothers me, makes me suspicious as they were very quiet...too quiet!...If there was a salmon farm table there, it wasnt spoken about in the presentation, nor addressed when the public were asking questions about the farms, just that the farms were under federal jurisdiction...hmmmm....I hope others go to the next couple of meetings and let them know that if theyre going to do this right...protecting wild salmon along migration routes is something they should be talking about..
