Were a group of Islington residents concerned with the safety and use of Canonbury Square, currently being used as a rat run. It was the first square built in Islington and was home to several key cultural figures including George Orwell where he wrote Animal Farm. The road design is an S shaped bend with 90 degree corners. On one corner there is no pavement between a metal fence and the road. Motorised traffic often cross along the wrong side of the road and at rush hour its grid locked with traffic fumes filling the pavements directly in front of homes. I have posted on our page pictures of vehicles on the wrong side of the road direclty on the corner of the square. Residents are telling us that there are accidents hapenning on a weekly basis and have told us that it prevents some residents from croossing the road to visit the gardens. As cyclists we have had very scary near misses. We are begiinning the process of engaging with residents, businesses and schools in the area. We have been in contact with the council and we would like Canonbury Square to be considered as part of the consultation for the proposed changes to the Highbury Corner Gyratory. We have been invited to the montlhly steering committee meetings and we would like to continue the momentum we have builst so far. We invite Stop Killing Cyclist and members of this group to support us by liking our facebook page and to provide comments whether it would be suggestions or your own experiences of Canonbury Square. We also have has great support from the Islington Cyclists Action Group who have helped us link up and provided guidance on how to communicate with the council. Thank you Fred Smith and Donnachadh McCarthy for your help on this so far. Many thanks Simon Izod
