Were only ONE WEEK away from Halloween, folks! Time for an all-new Spooky Spine-Tingler! Shadows on the Wall By Nate Riddle Matthew rubbed his eyes and shifted in his small twin bed. Glancing across the room he could see his big brother fast asleep. The small night light at the foot of his bed barely illuminated the boys’ room. “He’s awake”, an angry voice said. Matthew kept his eyes shut, pretending to breathe as if he were still sleeping. He turned on his side and pulled the covers up to his ear, a chill running up his spine. “This one is a little faker”, another horrible voice croaked. “Shall we kill him? Strip the skin from his bones?” Matthew began to shake and pressed his forehead against one of the stuffed animals that encircled him. Each night his mom placed a dozen or so teddy bears, plush dinosaurs and other friendly bedtime friends around her son to protect him. Matthew felt safer by steadfastly adhering to this ritual. However, it was clear to this five year old that what he was hearing was much worse than any bad dream. He forced himself to squint an eye open and look at the foot of his bed. Two large, menacing shadows writhed in the yellow light against the closet doors just feet from where he lay. “I see you, you little brat”, a voice growled. Matthew saw one of the two-dimensional shadows lurch into his field of view. It was a tall, pitch black, monstrous form. It extended arms that ended in sharp claws reaching at him from the wall. The little boy clenched his teeth and squeezed his eyes shut. “You think you’re safe, you little worm?! We’ll kill you. We’ll eat you! You are dead, little boy”, the other, thinner shadow threatened. “Your little, puny animals can’t protect you. Your brother is asleep, he can’t help you. Your mommy and daddy are in their room, and they’ll never believe you if you talk about us. We’ve come for you, and we’ll get you.” His hands squeezed at his favorite blanket, and he hoped with all hope to be spared whatever terrible fate they had in store for him. His stomach tightened and he could no longer hold back uncontrollable pouting. Tears of pure terror began to form around his eyes. Matthew prayed hard to make the bad things leave. “You little brat! This isn’t over! We’ll be back, and we’ll get you. You’ll see!” The voices howled in contempt, shrieking violently. The room was charged with crackling energy. Matthew’s ears were assaulted with a deafening silence. After a few moments, it seemed as though the two shades had left by way of the bedroom window. A rustling sounded from across the room. His brother Nathan kicked and turned about in bed. Matthew opened his eyes cautiously and found the shadow people to be gone. He leaped across the floor and into his brother’s bed for safety. Were they ghosts or something worse? Why him? The shadow things never returned, but they were real, and their visit continues to haunt him to this day.
