Wereke has been employed medicinally by various ethnic groups in Northwestern Mexico for many centuries. Early European explorers in Mexico such as Ignatz Pffeferkorn, for example, learned of this plant’s antiseptic action on the skin, from various natives of the states of Sinaloa and Sonora (Weidauer and Rojas 2002; Vázquez 1999). Wereke’s application for the treatment of diabetes appears to be more recent, although little information exists as to the extent of time it has been employed internally as a hypoglycemic agent by Mexican traditional herbalists, especially in the States of Chihuahua, Nuevo León, Sinaloa and Sonora (Johnson et al., 1996). In Ciudad Juarez, for example, the root is commonly used and currently available in a variety of forms, such as the crude drug, liquid extracts and capsules, for example. The medicinal use of this plant seems to be more localized in the North and Northwestern areas of Mexico (Vázquez, 1999; Johnson et al., 1996), as this plant is not commonly mentioned in publications from the southern or northeastern regions of that country (Adame and Adame, 2000; Aguilar, 1999; Gispert and Rodriguez, 1998; González, 1998; Linares et al., 1994; Martinez, 1989).
