West cumbria community hero award winners 2014.Emily and Alfie Shutt. Having gone two years suffering from Leukaemia with countless gruelling bouts of chemo and radiotherapy and her determination to lead life to the full brought tears to the room as she was awarded a West Cumbria Community Hero winner in her section. Smiler should be her name as its not many occassions when we do see that smile. The other winner was Alfie or as Emily calls him my superhero , a seven year old that would ask you to donate to the The Anthony Nolan Trust rather than buy him a present. Earlier this year we had bad news when some unusual cells were found and the only way forward was to find a bone marrow match. Up stepped Alfie a child wanting to be tested to help his sister, he was the perfect match but he wanted this kept low key. Arrangements were made and the family moved to Newcastle. Alfie had his procedure and proudly presented his bare bumb in my face to show me the two needle holes , one in each cheek.lol. During this period Emily was prepared for her transplant and once ready she was allowed to press the button to start the bone marrow transplant , as she pressed the button she shoted thank you Alfie and the room filled with tears. I would like to thank all of our friends that support Emilys Journey on Facebook and a huge thank you to my budgie friends who donated raffle prizes for Emilys Fund. youtu.be/HaPKQKBhsrI
