Weve heard the story drone on for days now; the right wing says Bowe Bergdahl is a deserter. He left his post. Hes a traitor. He wasnt worth saving. The trade was lopsided. And those five bad guys we traded him for were the worst of the worst. They had American blood on their hands. Theyre Taliban kingpins. (Why, I even heard they drank babies blood for breakfast instead of orange juice)! So heres what I want to know: in the cases of ALL SIX OF THESE MEN, whatever happened to presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law? These five Taliban detainees have been warehoused like cordwood for years, never given an opportunity to make their case. And Bergdahl may or may not have abandoned his post, but Im less inclined to take Bill OReillys word for it than the results of a fair trial. If theres evidence of wrongdoing on Bergdahls part, then bring him home and Court Martial him. We cant do that if hes being held hostage half-way around the world. And in this case, the right has already arrived at the proper sentence, even before hes been allowed to speak -- Banishment. And the same should have been applied to EVERYONE held at Guantanamo; either convict them or exonerate them, and let those found innocent go home to their families. But it wasnt, and since nature abhors a vacuum, weve let the collective wisdom of Sean Hannity, Ann Coulter and Glenn Beck convict these men, and now the White House is once again under fire. I truly hope this incident turns into the straw that breaks the camels back. The right-wing has been salivating at the prospect of impeaching this president, and at this point, I hope they do so, and I hope THIS will be their veritable petard. For folks who insist they love America as much as they claim to, its astounding how they reject its most sacrosanct foundations. – Innocent until proven guilty – It applies to soldiers in theater, and suspected adversaries alike. Unless youre a 21st Century conservative.
