We’re living in a strange society. I can describe this with one - TopicsExpress

We’re living in a strange society. I can describe this with one of my real life experiences. Consider the society as a compartment of Delhi Metro. It’s packed up with very less space even to breathe. A girl who was tired (or may be not- just romance bugged) hugged and kissed her boyfriend passionately. Immediately the incident raised curiosity among the fellow passengers and soon a man in his late forties commented – “This is not right. This is a public place. You shouldnt do this.” The girl replied – “Shouldnt do what?” Being charged guilty of showing the affection in public she protested, “What’s your problem? Youve a dirty mind.” Now few of the other voices supported the old man and said how wrong the girl was kissing her boyfriend in a metro. Couple of young boys supported the couple but they were minimal. Most of the people in the metro restrained taking any sides. They might be supporting either of them in mind but didnt speak up. With the peer pressure the couple finally got off in next station. Now what do we see in this picture? One fourth of our society has moved on to a different generation of thoughts. That is contrasting of past. One fourth is still living with the ideologies that were established long back. If you think about this carefully it’s a dangerous cohabitation. These two sections are so diverse in philosophy, they are bound to collide and badly. You must be wondering about the other half of the society. Well, it’s easy. Actually the most people – the other half of the society are neutral, indecisive people. We are stuck somewhere in between. We are neither progressive nor conservative completely. When the other two collide, we end up being spectators. I’ll finish this write-up with one request– enough of trying and balancing the see-saw; it’s collapsing each and every day. Choose left or right, but choose your side. Live and let live. Let the system be stable. Copyright: ©Suman Bhattacharya, 2014
