“We’re seeing a number of problems with mentally ill inmates in our jails,” said Assemblywoman Nily Rozic (D-Fresh Meadows), who’s a member of the Correction Committee. “We hope to get the full story of what’s happening inside our correctional facilities that have inmates with mental illness. This could help us draft meaningful measures going forward.” Rozic said the truth is untold about the treatment of mentally ill inmates at Rikers Island, 40 percent of whom suffer from mental issues. The reported deaths should initiate change in correctional settings because “a lot needs to be done” for reform, she said, adding: “These inmates need the help they deserve,” Rozic said.
