What I appreciate about the following is the way Rachmaninov has achieved such air between instruments, like some great producers achieve the same effect by their expert use of compression; it is like every sound occupies its rightful space in the frequency spectrum. How has Rachmaninov achieved this; is it harmonic structure or the skill of his arrangement? I realise it is both, but surely one has more weight than the other? or does it? One thing i did notice; they way you can build emotional intensity with the piano by creating chord sequences. I tend to forget that the piano is a percussive instrument; I tend to treat it like an arpeggiator machine!! But this is such a limited way of thinking. What i admire about Rachmaninov is his expansive style. It is a style with appears easy but is in fact easy to merely make a complete mess of.
