What I heard from some Little Birdies about what happened at The Family Leaders Family Leadership Summit held in Iowa over the weekend. 1) Texas Governor Rick Perry gave maybe his best speech ever and was also a big hit in the vendor/table area mixing it up with the gen pop. 2) Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal also created a little buzz with his appearance, and has some people looking at him differently. One Little Birdie told me his name kept coming up among those at the special VIP reception held afterwards. 3) Ted Cruz was, according to one Little Birdie, exactly what youd expect out of Ted Cruz. You couldnt hear the end of his speech because the standing ovation was so loud. 4) However, yet again Ted Cruz may have been upstaged by his father, Pastor Rafael Cruz. I saw several of the other main speakers make a point of heading back into the hall to hear what he had to say. NOTE: Rafael Cruzs speech is the only one I got to see other than Joel Rosenbergs. 5) I was told Mike Huckabee was well-received, but he needs something original. He needs to give these folks a reason to get on board again with such a strong field out there. 6) During his book signing, some Rick Santorum supporters from the 2012 Iowa Caucus mentioned how they first met him when he was campaigning in their town a few years ago. Well, I may be coming your way again, I overheard Santorum say to them. 7) Libertarian gubernatorial candidate Dr. Lee Hieb had a table at the event, although she was not there herself (she had a prior speaking engagement she could not miss). Im told there were several conversations/questions asked of those holding down the fort instead about where shes truly at on the life issue. It appears after several appearances on Jan Mickelsons show on WHO people still arent sure. 8) Speaking of gubernatorial candidates, one Little Birdie told me response to Terry Bransads talk was tepid and that it looked like (emcee) Bob Vander Plaats was trying to get the crowd to give Terry a standing ovation, but they were having none of it. 9) Several national and local influential people I talked to (including those sympathetic/supportive of a Rand Paul presidential run), said they really doubted Rand Paul was pro-Israel. 10) The two busiest booths I saw: Alveda Kings and Draft Ben Carson. Ill have some more stuff in my upcoming Washington Times column.
