What Is Societal Impact of Laser Tattoo Removal? In society today it is estimated that close to 10% of the population has some sort of tattoo. At some point as many as 50% of them want to have it removed and consider laser tattoo removal as an option. However; not all 50% of that population go through with the removal. There are various reasons an individual may want to have their tattoos removed reasons such as professional appearances or “tattoo regret.” Regardless of the reason, it is important for society to know that laser tattoo removal is a safe and effective procedure that will assist them in undoing something that for years was permanent for the most part. The safer an individual feels about having a removal, the greater the chances they will go through with the procedure. An individual’s decision to get a tattoo removed is often based on their fear of the long-term effects after removal, which includes scaring, healing and visibility of the tattoo upon completion. My sister and mother are part of the 50% population. Both have tattoos that for professional reasons and “tattoo regret” would like to have them removed. My sister has scheduled the appointment to have hers removed but due to fear of the unknown cancelled the day of. For the 50% of this population that are considering the procedure, having taken the time out to look at the risks of laser tattoo removal will assist in making an informed, comfortable and confident decision about having the procedure. It is important that society is well informed about the minimal risks involved in laser tattoo removal. Risks include minor skin discoloration, possible infection, lack of complete pigment removal, scarring and a raised scar may appear several months after removal. These risks are virtually minimal compared to those of dermabrasion for tattoo removal, which includes those same risks in addition to redness, swelling, bleeding or possible infection. Taking the approach of informing society about the minimal risks of laser tattoo removal may greatly increase the number of individuals opting for the procedure as well as minimize the fears many individuals have in society about the possible risks/side effects associated with the procedure.
