What a find I had today at the feed store. It is a reference guide that is perfect in every way, at least for me. It is a laminated pamphlet called Butterflies of Central Texas: Guide to common and Notable Species, by Valerie G. Bugh. It has excellent photos of 84 different butterflies and they are arranged by how they look, so the Monarch, Queen, Viceroy, and Soldier are all together. Makes it easy to compare features, like on those blue-tailed black butterflies that are so hard to distinguish from one another. The whole thing is the size of 2 sheets of paper, and it is accordion folded. I could not have done better if I had done it myself - except maybe some ventral views. She has the common names, scientific names, size, season, host plants, ans a photo of the caterpillar. Cost: $5.99. What a great deal!!!
