What a great day. Rode with almost 500 other Harley bikers to raise money for Ethan. This ride was to raise money to purchase a service dog for Ethan a child with type 1 diabetes 500 Harley owners got together to raise money for a Ethan Amara the son of Deputy Sheriff Chad Amara and his wife Christina. Ethan was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes on January 13, 2014 and the families lives forever changed. For those that dont know much about T1 diabetes - his pancreas no longer creates the insulin he needs therefore he needs at least 2 insulin shots a day in order to maintain a healthy blood sugar level. He has to get his finger pricked at least 4 times day (more if he isnt feeling well). Knowing there is nothing they can do to cure it is the hardest thing that they, as parents, are going through. The best thing they can do is manage it the best they can and pray for a cure. Although its only been one month since his diagnosis, Ethan has had several days where his blood sugar is extremely low which is very scary because hypoglycemia can result in low blood sugar seizures or a coma - this is their worse fear! This is where a trained service dog can help.!! They have been in contact with a company that trains diabetic dogs to detect when blood sugar gets too high or low. The dog will sense the change and alert Ethan to check his sugar, he will even be able to open the fridge and take Ethan a juice box or call 911!! A diabetic alert dog will be able to give Chad a little peace of mind knowing that highs and lows can be detected even when Ethan is sleeping!! But, of course, that kind of peace of mind is expensive. A diabetic alert dog costs $25,000. It really is an investment into Ethans future, it really can be a lifesaver for him. So in light of all this it was great to raise over $10,000 for them today and get them a free flight out to meet the dog and get proper training - Great day!
