What a great day in Vienna it was yesterday! First we met with the guys from MORTALICUM (for the third time) and STONEGRIFF (for the first time) and went for a walk in the old town. And the SPRINGDOOM DEPRESSION festival was a fantastic, well organized event with a really strong billing, in a small but very cool club, which was pretty packed that night. COSMIC WASTELAND from Germany opened it. Traditional doom, quite good stuff, but not sure if 3 guitars were really necessary - it didnt add to the clarity of their sound and the 5 guys on the stage (plus drummer) barely had any space to move. Next was the first Swedish band, STONEGRIFF who gave a really enjoyable and headbanging-inducing show. Especially Jacob impressed us with his characteristic screams and that he could hit all the high notes just like on the album, seemingly without any effort. It was awesome to hear the songs from Prologus Magicus live - and they also played one new track In Doom We Trust. Next were the Polish monks from the epic doom band EVANGELIST. It was only their second show, so if they continue to play live they will surely become a force to be reckoned with, as they definitely have strong foundations to build upon: great songs (and vocals!) and a good stage image. Then MORTALICUM entered the stage and once again proved the quality of Swedish doom. Stripped down to 3 members now they sounded even more tight and gave a more energetic doom-rocking show than the ones we had seen before when they were still a 4-piece. They played a few songs from their 1st, 2nd and also the upcoming 3rd album Tears from the Grave, which went down really well with the fans even though it was the first time they heard them. Finally the headliners: epic heavy/doom metal masters ATLANTEAN KODEX! One can easily see that these guys have a huge live experience - they kept on playing as if nothing was going on when one guitar amp broke and then the lights went off completely 4 times during their show. No confusion at all and no mistakes! But most of all awesome epic metal delivered with true passion! After the shows we didnt really feel like leaving the club, as the music played by the DJ was all pure old school stuff, and for the big part not of the mainstream kind, which is quite rare. So we still spent some nice time hanging out with our old and new Swedish friends, but eventually everyone had to leave as they had to travel back home quite early.
