What a night. I just got back from one of the best concerts of my life at El Corazon. Had a blast on the drive there and back (and during) with some great friends Ronald Hunter Winchar, David V. Kimball, Jake Woodward, and Mason Chaussee. I got to see some fantastic old friends, had an amazing time and an epic reunion of one of my first crews at Northwest -- Rebekah Predmore and Joseph Coburn. I loved seeing Alex Rosas and Adventures In Wonderland, as well as Jonathan Foster, Josh Wiedenmeyer and Alive And Well. I was also very much blown away by a talent previously unknown to me -- Michael Monroe. MMs voice sounds like a wonderful fusion of Bob Dylan and Billy Corgan, and he killed it tonight. So credit to all of them. The night, of course, was made even better by one of my absolute favorite local bands and live shows -- The New Tribe (Or the Band Formerly Known As The Union Street Orchestra.) Peter McMurray and Phillip Tomas Cerna Jr. are some of the most talented vocalists I have EVER met, and if you havent heard them yet, you literally have NO idea what youre missing. I will still never forget seeing Phil at rehearsals for his big recital last year -- hes really something else, guys. It was a great night with great shows, but something in particular made the night extraordinary for me. I consider myself a superfan of The Exchange -- I go to all their local shows (and lots of their not local shows!) and am consistently amazed by the talent of all the members. Even without Mikey as the lead singer, they are stronger than ever! With all that said, its not all that surprising when Britt Sipho Espinosa or Jack Espinosa gives me a shout out. Its happened a few times before, and always makes me grin like a child. Nothing in the world could have possibly prepared me for what came next though. Britt wrote a song about me and the work that Lighthouse does with the homeless called Compass. Ive never, to my knowledge, had a song written about me before. Its hard for me not to have a huge head about this, but I will do my best to be humble -- what excites me truly, though, is the exposure that the homeless people of Seattle and the world may get as a result of this song. If I was to die tomorrow and there was a legacy left of what I had done, I could only pray it was about my heart for the homeless. Britt, you are one of my greatest friends -- I am proud to be your friend, and Im proud of you. Im honored that you wrote that song, and Im even more honored that you remember Lighthouse and our work. Thanks for everything, youre the best.
