What a way to start a football game! Last night I refereed a JV game. Opening kick-off was returned ~85 yards for a TD. Then, scoring team kicks off and it was returned 95 yards for a TD. HUFF, PUFF - lots of running for the officials. Next, scoring team kicks off and runner is down at around their 30. 1st play from scrimmage, QB pitches to tailback, he takes it around the right side and scampers for a 70 yard TD! Okay, now I have 5 officials, me included, with their tongue hanging out! Of course, here in SC, it is still in the 90s with high humidity. With the heat, I have to be aware of player safety and take an officials timeout for water! We are less than 1 minute into the game, so, I gather the officials and ask them if they are okay - Do we, the officials, not the players, need a timeout? LOL
