What an awesome dad! James definitely never shared a dance with either Patience or John, although he shared a few secret slow dances with me in our living room. (He was convinced that men who danced were totally not cool) But, he did many other outrageously funny things that the kids, especially Patience, will always remember fondly. His humor was such, that even back in the earliest, deepest time of our sorrow, we were able to think of something he had said or done, or one of us would say the comment we were pretty sure he wouldve said regarding certain situations and were able to laugh in spite of the tears. I was blessed to also have an awesome daddy myself, who was considered so cool the kids didnt mind him showing up at the Wildcat Corner game room. After they saw that he passed no judgement and watched him play pool, the whole table would be lined up with quarters from boys who wanted to play with him. But the most awesome of awesome things he ever did, was taking my abusive ex-husband on a plane ride with us and giving him a little fright. He took the plane straight up, let it stall and start falling, and he and I sat calmly discussing the names of all the buttons and dials as the trees grew ever nearer. I wasnt worried. It was my daddy. When the trees seemed close enough to almost reach out and touch, daddy reached up and pulled gently on the yoke with one or two fingers and leveled us off. We werent in a complete nosedive. When we landed, which was also terrifying because daddy let me do it and I had always and still do suck at landing, my ex stumbled out of the plane, fell to all fours and literally kissed the pavement. I turned and watched my daddy walking away and he had an ear to ear grin on his face. He wasnt fond of my ex. And, my ex never asked to go up with us again. I know its not Fathers Day, but heres to the dads who really are awesome. The ones who take the job seriously and raise their children with authority, but also gentleness, love, and humor. May all men aspire to be one. :)
