What do Marius the giraffe, sharks, kangaroos and the street dogs of Sochi have in common? You’ve probably seen them all pop up in your news feed this week and been shocked by their treatment. What’s common between these animals is that they each lack the protection of adequate legal rights. In most countries, animals who can feel pain, fear and joy have a similar legal status to a chair or a table. This, quite simply, is not good enough.
