What exactly is Clinical Neuropsychology and who is a Clinical Neuropsychologist? Clinical neuropsychology is a specialty field within clinical psychology. It is focused on understanding the relationship between the brain and behavior, and applying this knowledge by evaluating an individual’s thinking skills (cognitive functioning), mood, and behavior, diagnosing brain disorders, and treating these disorders. For example, a clinical neuropsychologist may help to diagnose and develop customized treatment plans for individuals who have problems with memory, attention, or other cognitive functions. A clinical neuropsychologist is a doctoral level (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) licensed psychologist who provides these evaluations and treatment services to people of all ages based upon the scientific concepts derived from psychology, neurology, neuropsychology, psychiatry, psychometrics, and other related fields. Those who are well trained in clinical neuropsychology have a broad background in clinical psychology, as well as specialized training and experience in clinical neuropsychology. Specifically, in addition to the required doctoral degree in psychology from an accredited university training program and completion of an accredited internship in clinical psychology, typically, a well-trained neuropsychologist has also completed the equivalent of 2 years of additional specialized training in clinical neuropsychology.
