Handwritten letters for breakfast poetry for snacks Becoming dependent on them remembering to leave post-it notes underneath your pillow in case you needed a midnight snack Or instead whisper in your ear all night When they retold their surreal dreams through the morning quiet you’d get intoxicated dizzy and word drunk sweet dessert words substantial meaty words with details for seasoning Junk food words that feel good until they make you want to die Will they offer you warm words on days when you are frozen? like hot cider burning down down down your throat Will you get bored of eating the same thing over and over and over when they repeat themselves? Will they provide you with enough sustenance to nourish to heal you like ginger tea? Will you remain full and satisfied? Would they have enough to say to fill you all the way up? Or would you go hungry and shrink? become bonier bonier bonier in their silence Would you choke on their sharp harsh sentences when they finally spoke? Will your body be poisoned when they take another lover? Will you demand a diet or try to throw all their words back up on the linoleum floors? leaving the mess for them to clean up while you sit at the table eating your apology Will you develop an allergy over time? Break out in hives simply over the way they cross their T’s Would you eventually give up? Go to a bar meet someone new and say I’ll make a meal out of you. -Kait Payne
