What is ASL? (idea behind the ice bucket challenge) ASL ( Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) is considered to be one of the most common neuromuscular diseases in the world and there is no cure yet for it. This is because the cause of ASL is not yet completely known but researches found that it might have genetic links (5-10% of all cases are hereditary). Basically, what ASL does is it affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal chord (two incredibly important developmental areas of the body) and progressively slow down the function of motor neurons which are vital for sending impulses to the muscle to you can create movement. Generally, this leads to total paralysis. 90-95% of all cases occur randomly with no clear cause. The ice bucket challenge has been around for a while and is not exclusive to only ASL awareness. The idea of the challenge is that the ice-cold sensation is similar to the numbing effect of ASL. Reports show that so many of these videos are done just for fun, rather than actually donating or raising awareness of ALS. And if you have done this challenge without knowing what this is all about as Im writing, or you didnt donate, then I guess youre one of them.
