What is Physical Activity? Physical Activity is not just about exercise. It’s about every little thing we do that requires our muscles to contract to produce movement. No matter the amount of effort required, any movement is still physical activity. Types of activities. Incidental Exercise: is any activity that replaces an automated option designed by our convenient lifestyle of living. This form of exercise should never be underestimated. Some forms of incidental exercise include. -Taking the stairs instead of the lift. -Walking to the shops of driving. -Hand washing the car instead of using a drive through. Throughout the day this can increase the amount of calories burnt, which in turn will help to improve your health and wellbeing. Levels of Activity. -Light activities include housework, golf, slow walks, lawn bowls. These activities include anything that requires any movement but do not raise the heart rate significantly. -Moderate activities include dancing, riding, sailing, tennis and stretching exercises or any other type of activity that raises the heart rate without causing too much discomfort. -Heavy activities are activities that involve a degree of exertion on the muscles and cardiovascular system. Activities like swimming, running, cycling and weight training fall into this category. Different energy systems are required to provide fuel for the body to perform these tasks. Why is it important to be Physically Active? Any movement of the body can provide numerous health benefits. These include; -Maintaining an ideal body composition -Reducing the risk of heart disease -Reducing the risk of Type 2 Diabetes -Improved bone density -Lower the risk of depression and other mood related conditions And there are countless other benefits to gain from increasing the amount of activity we do. Challenge Over the next month i would like all of you to increase the amount of Physical Activity you do daily no matter what job you do there is always a way to get some activity into your day. In a corporate environment you can stand up when making and receiving phone calls, When your standing your core muscles along with other smaller supporting muscles through your hips, knees and ankles engage to keep you upright unlike when your sitting where no major muscle activation is required to remain upright. If your job is quite active already I want you to try taking a short walk when you get home. This can be a good opportunity to spend time with your pets or family members and your increasing your daily activity. It really isn’t too hard to increase your daily activity and over time all these little extra efforts you put in will help you to achieve your goals. "Attack Life"
