What is SNMP | Simple Network Management Protocol? EmailShare Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is a network management specification developed by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), a part of the Internet Activities Board (IAB), in the mid-1980s as management standards for products LAN-based network, such as bridges, routers, and wiring concentrator. Services-network-cloud SNMP is designed to reduce the level of complexity of network management and the many resources needed to support such management. The existence of SNMP enables network management is centralized, powerful, and compatible on all platforms. In addition, SNMP provides the flexibility to management information that is owned by a particular vendor’s products. SNMP is a communications specification that describes how the management information exchanged between network management applications with management agents. There are several versions of SNMP, but the popular ones are SNMPv1 and SNMPv2. SNMP was designed by the IETF for use on the Internet. Currently SNMP protocol designed over UDP (User Datagram Protocol). Because it uses UDP protocol, SNMP is a connectionless protocol. With this protocol overhead is reduced and the process can be obtained simplicity. If the required reliability and accountabilitas, network managers must establish a connection-oriented operation in the application layer on top of it. Elements of SNMP: 1. Manager is the software that runs on a host on the network. In fact, this manager is a regular computer on the network that operate network management software. Manager consists of one or more processes that communicate with his agents and the network. Managers will gather information from a network of agents who have not requested by the administrator all information owned agency. Not all information held by the agent was asked by the manager. The information requested by the network administrator, who runs a host that serves as a manager that will be collected from the agents. 2. MIB (Manager Information Base) can be considered as a variable data base structure of the managed network elements. This structure of the hierarchy and have rules such that any information or set of variables can be managed easily. The top level of the standard MIB OID depends on the different organizations. This model allows management across all layers of the OSI model, extend to applications such as databases, email, and examples of java model, as the MIB can be depicted for all such information and specific areas of operation. 3. Agent is software that runs on each managed network element. Each agent has a database that is local variables that explain the situation and file activity and its impact on operations.
