What is Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR)? Southern - TopicsExpress

What is Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR)? Southern Medical Group physicians offer transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) as an option for patients who do not qualify for open-heart surgery, because they are too frail or too high-risk due to other co-morbidities. With TAVR, a catheter is used to implant the replacement valve through the femoral artery in the groin or transapically. TAVR is less invasive, does not require stopping the heart, and is associated with a more rapid recovery than open-heart surgery. TAVR procedures are performed at Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare (TMH), one of a few select hospitals in the nation, and the only hospital in the Big Bend/South Georgia/Southeastern Alabama regions, offering this procedure.
