What is amazing is the commonality between China and Americas overheated society, a rapid-paced lifestyle of bling-bling, winner take all, hypergreed, hypermaterialism, hyperconsumerism. In this perverse environment, there is a spiritual void. Cults and messianic sycophants emerge out of this void, and will often exploit the emptiness in peoples lives. Amuck rampages and inexplicable acting out rise... as mental illnesses living under this pressure cooker situation put pressures on peoples psyche and sense of well-being. We are seeing more of these flare-ups now, both in China and in America. These are the worlds # 1 and # 2 economies. In Chinas unique situation, historically the explosion of cults whether the Yellow Turban, the Taipings, the Boxers, the FLGs, have always been characterized by turbulence and instability, and impoverishment of the laobaixing outside of the ambit of the urban elite. In this case, in Shandong, an area out of the megacities, such as Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chengdu, Chongqing..... the signals are clear..... China is overheated, and foundering. The GDP (Gross National Product) growth may look stellar and great on the surface, but the GDH (Gross National Happiness) index are not so good. Can it be corrected? You bet. Chinas new helmsman Xi Jinping and his team have a hugh load on their plates. It is a major gargantuan effort to balance the needed growth, and feed the laobaxing, ensuring that they live good, decent lives..... and balance against all of this overheat and clutter. Rapid urbanization with obsession with GDP metrics without the GDH intangible measures can be fraught with danger.
