What is smelling? Everybody sure knows what his or her car smells like, but you should pay extra attention if you smell something unusual. These odours could be a warning sign that should not be ignored likely. Here are some smells to watch out for. Rotten Egg Smell: This is a serious one, it could be the smell of hydrogen sulphide which indicates a catalytic converter may not be working properly in converting the hydrogen sulphide in the exhaust to sulphur dioxide. Make sure you have your car checked by a qualified technician to ascertain the status of your catalytic converter Gasoline smell: This can indicate a leak in the fuel supply line there should be no smell of petrol other than when you are filling up your tank Burning smell: If you notice this during brake, it can indicate brake problems have your brake lines and brake pads checked by a qualified technician. Some other causes of burning smell could be a seized drive belt or an electrical circuit overload. Burning oil smell: This is attributed to a gasket or seals that have become weak which allows oil leak into the engine exhaust manifold, the leaks may be small but they should be taken seriously as low engine oil pressure could cause serious damage to your engine, Check your engine oil dipstick frequently if you are losing oil, chances are there might be a leak somewhere. Stale smell: Your cabin air filter (usually located behind the glove compartment) could be clogged with dirt, if left unattended a blocked air filter will make you operate the fan for the A/C at high settings just to make the air circulate better in the car, operating the fan blower at high speeds over a period of time will make it burn out, which could be costly to replace. In this part of the world where we have dusty roads it is recommended to replace your cabin air filter every 30,000 miles. Being cautious to any changes in your vehicles odour can alert or inform you to a potential problem, by paying attention to these changes you could save a lot of money in the long run.
