What is success? Most of us struggle to clearly define what this idea of being successful is. Often people see their own success as a comparison with the people around them and quantify their success based on material wealth, if not prestige, recognition, security, peace of mind and so on. Being successful has many aspects (spiritual, mental, physical, social, financial and family). But to all these aspects, the fundamental point lies within fulfilling our individual potential and also the process in the striving for it, and upon reaching it, to continue to strive for the next level of our human potential. This reminds me of when I was in secondary school during which I was preparing for my O levels. I was in a combined science class, average student at best (Cs and Bs), throughout those secondary school years. But when it came to preparing for the O levels, something just clicked. In my mind, I was actually just aiming for 16-17 points (enough to get into TPJC), because I knew that would be an achievement in itself, not having scored anywhere close to that before. So to cut the long story short, I planned a 6 month study program which turned out to be really quite painful all up till my O levels. Did it and on the day of our results, when I went to collect my O level result slip from my teacher, to say I was surprised was an understatement, because I managed all 7 points(All As except for Chinese of course). The point is, going back to the aspect on human potential; Our potential is an inexhaustible reservoir, and it is up to us to realise and develop this. Self Image When we come to realise our well of potential and our self worth, it is then that we start to respect our role in our jobs, or as a child, a financial planner, a student in SMI, a leader, or especially just as a human being in life. It is only when we ourselves are filled with respect that we can respect others, filled with wealth that we can give wealth to others, and that applies to all other aspects such as knowledge, service, peace etc. Importance of Self motivation Any man can succeed if enough doors are opened, but only the wise man knows that he must open the doors for himself. For this, he must have the KEY, and the KEY is found deep within him I was speaking to Gideon Leong last week after SMI. And we spoke about the power of choice and taking ownership of our choices because when the choice of success is our own, if we take hold of it, our actions and internal motivation will drive us towards our choices. In the same way, the KEY has to be found within ourselves, and that is where self motivation takes place. However, to find this, we can always use help from our peers, our leaders but most importantly, we have to want to find this key ourselves.
